• Mr.Ulmer's WebQuest : Genetic Diseases
    and Mendelian Genetic Patterns
This is an Web activity created by Mr. Ed Ulmer, M.S.

PA Standard : S11.B.2.1.2…Compare and contrast cellular processes,

3.3.12. C. Explain gene inheritance and expression

at the molecular level.  2.   Explain birth defects from the standpoint of embryological

development and/or changes in genetic makeup.

The PA English standards include research and documentation for 8th grade.

    PA English Standard1.8.8.C:

Produce an organized product that presents and reflects on findings, draws sound conclusions, and gives proper credit to sources.

    PA English Standard 1.8.10.B:

Conduct inquiry and research on self-selected or assigned topics, issues, or problems using information from a variety of sources; document sources using a consistent format for citations.

Demonstrate that sources have been evaluated for accuracy, bias, and credibility.Organize information by classifying, categorizing, and sequencing. Demonstrate the distinction between one’s own ideas from the ideas of others, and includes a reference page.

Purpose The students will use web technology effectively to gather information in a real-world task.  Actual medical resource web sites are used to collect information about human genetic diseases.  Academically, the students must organize the information and document their sources formally, using MLA format (Our school's standard form).

Web Site Name: National Center For Biotechnology Information: Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man

Who made the site: Dr. Victor McKusick of Johns Hopkins University

Purpose of the site: It is a database of human genes and genetic disorders.  It also contains "copious links" and a link to NCBI's Entrez database of Medline articles.

Directions: Start the WebQuest : You will use the following Medical Web Sites to collect information about eight genetic diseases.  You will create two products and a presentation:

         A Research Information Paper
Each student will construct a paper which includes one genetic disease.
           1. A Works Cited is required.
           2. How long?  You must adequately answer the questions.
           3. A medical terms glossary must be included.
           4. Two visuals with labels must be included.

FIRST:  Choose one Human Genetic Disease from this list.

    a. Cystic Fibrosis            b. Sickle Cell Anemia       c. Tay-Sachs Disease

           d. Hemophilia A             e. Deutan Color Blindness

    f. Hunter's Syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis II)

    g. Lesch - Nyhan Syndrome

    h.  Severe combined immune deficiency syndrome (SCIDS)

    i. Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy

    j. Menkes

SECOND: Collect information from the web.  Copy/Paste the information into a Word document.   Be sure to copy/paste the web address or URL.  This will be an active link which you can use to return to the web source.

        A. Links : USE THIS LINK FIRST. Find the required information which is listed below.

Online Mendelian Inheritence of Man           http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Omim/

          B.  Click on the OMIM Database link
          C. Use the "Search OMIM" by entering a key word related to the following questions:
           D. Try these other web sites or the Google search engine to find any missing information.    These web sites contain real medical information.  Finding medical information that an average person can understand is a real-world task.  Be sure to keep a record of where your information is found.  You will need this for your "Works Cited"
Three Sources must be used .

      MLA Web Help :  CitationMachine
This Web Site will make the citation for you.  It can also make the parenthetical notation.

               1.    MedWeb

             2.   Center for Disease Control  ( CDC)

3    National Institute of Health    (NIH)

             4.    American  Academy of Pediatrics

    1. Each person researches one disease.

    2.  Create a research information paper for each disease to organize the information.  This is done on 8” x 11” or regular printer paper.   We will review how to construct a research paper.  Provide a Works Cited in MLA format for all sources used.  Parenthetical notation must be used at each piece of information which is copied.  More information is below...

    4.  Describe one of  the following human genetic disorders, giving :

         Symptoms

Defects ( what is the physical cause)

Dominant or Recessive (Autosomal or X-linked)

        Frequency among births

        Who is at risk ?

Is there a test for the disease?

Other Facts ( You must include other facts about the disease.)

    a. Cystic Fibrosis            b. Sickle Cell Anemia       c. Tay-Sachs Disease

           d. Hemophilia A             e. Deutan Color Blindness

    f. Hunter's Syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis II)

    g. Lesch - Nyhan Syndrome

    h.  Severe combined immune deficiency syndrome (SCIDS)

    i. Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy

    j. Menkes

THIRD:    Construct your research paper. You can copy/paste information from your various sources.  Use parenthetical notation to show where the information was found.  Use your own words to tie it all togetherThree sources must be used . Each student will submit a research paper .
    1. Include pictures, diagrams, and tables.  You must have at least 2 visuals.  Document the source used for the visual in MLA.
    2. Include parenthetical notations for work that is copy/pasted.
    3. Included a Works Cited in MLA.  You must have three sources for each disease.

You will need to define medical terms used in your collection of  information.
Use this link and or any other reliable source to define the medical terms.

FOURTHInclude a Glossary of these terms in your information packet.

    Medical Dictionary

    Samples:

    Sample Rough Rough Draft Sample
    Sample MLA Rough Draft MLA
Sample of Final Product  ( one part) :Paper
Sample of Final Product (with notes):  Paper
This sample has a color code.  Blue words are words added by the student.   Black words were copy/pasted.   Red words show parenthetical notations.  The student;'s final paper should be all black ink.

    Research Paper : Due 1/ 7 / 2013

A normal font must be used, and the paper must be printed out and stapled together.
    No plastic covers, please.
Works Cited page is required. Include the sources of the visuals , too.

The paper must be printed out and submitted on the due date, or points will be deducted.
