How to do Cornell Notes:Cornell Notes are a VERY HELPFUL way of learning information from a book.I have required them for my classes for 12 years. Many students have told me that this practice helped them to learn. The note method is originally from the Ivy League's Cornell University. I have modified them for use by high school students.
I will provide a hand-out and I will demonstrate Cornell Notes in class.1. These notes are done in a notebook; with the exception of the first assignment.2. There are four zones that are created and used on your paper. Zone 1 is the index, zone 2 is the main body, zone 3 is for your questions, and zone 4 is for additional classs notes and the answers to your questions.3. First, the notes are a way of organizing key vocabulary and concepts from reading the textbook.4. Second, the notes are clear evidence that the student has read the textbook. They are a reading aid.5. Finally, the Cornell Notes become an excellent study guide for tests and exams.Zone 1 : This is the Index. Students list the key words and page number from the page in the textbook. Photo titles and diagrams are listed.Zone 2 : The Main Body : This is where the key word is defined and longer explainations are written. Also, photos and diagrams are described.Zone 3 : Your Questions : Students are required to write one question about the topic on the text page.Zone 4 : Class Notes : This section is left blank until the Cornell Notes are reviewed in class. Students add answers to their question from zone 3, and add notes about any information that they missed including.A typical Cornell Note assignement would be to complete Cornell Notes for a chapter. This will be BEFORE the chapter is covered in class. Typically, the notes are started in class, and up to two weeks are given for the completion.
