    9/6 - 9/7 LAB 2  Lab Techniques

    9/7 - 9/9 LAB 3 Common Household Chemicals
    This lab will get you using lab techniques and thinking about how to come up with a lab procedure to solve a problem.  The problem will be to identify what is in a mixture of powders that all look the same.

    Vocab:  indicator, physical changes, chemical changes, observations (scientific), claim, and evidence

    Notes:
    1) your write up should include the correct use of these vocab terms.
    2) write ups are like geometry proofs, logical and each claim has to supported with either a reference or evidence.
    3) data tables are cool, er.. I mean very helpful, remember a picture is worth a thousand words!
    4) diagrams are cool too!..  er ... I mean very helpful
    5) flow charts are great!...  er.. I mean extremely useful to show a procedure!

    9/21 - 9/23 LAB 4 Candle Lab
    This lab is intended to get you making Observations and to continue using Claim, Evidence and Reasoning.

    9/26 - 9/27 LAB 4/ACTIVITY  Graphing  (This activity will be graded and scored as a Lab grade.)

    10/5 - 10/7 LAB 5/ Density by Slope of a Graph (DUE MONDAY 10/7)
    Your group is provided with a balance, graduated cylinder, water and a metal. You are to determine the density of this metal by collecting and graphing the mass and volume data*. 

     You will be working in teams of four to collect the data, but one report per partnership will be submitted.  You must decide how to split up the work and I will be checking to be sure that each person is contributing to the writing of the lab.  This is the template you are to follow when typing this lab.This lab will be typed and worked on in word and will be graded as per this rubric. Be sure to read the rubric to determine what you need to provide in your lab write-up.

    Before proceeding, show a written procedure to your teacher.

    10/18 - 10/19 Measuring the specific heat of a metal (DUE MONDAY 10/24)
    The objective is to measure the specific heat of a metal.  Then compare that value with a known value from a valid source.
    Your claim will need to answer the question: What your measured specific heat of this metal?
    • work in groups of four (only one report will be submitted per group)
    • plan your experiment with the objective in mind
    • create a procedure using the equipment provided
    • once you have explained the method to the teacher, you may begin making measurements
    • While the metal is heating, look up the actual specific heat for your metal and record the source that you used and create your data table
    • Make sure that you record at least 3 observations of sources of error
    • After you have collected one set of data, calculate the specific heat and the % error for this trial
    • Based on your % error, you and your partner are to decide whether you want to change the mass of the metal used or the time it was heated in order to reduce your percent error -YOU MUST HAVE A VALID REASON FOR THE CHOICE YOU MADE and discuss it with the teacher before starting the second trial. (we will do it if we have time!)

     4/12 -4/13 Cooling Curve LAB -> Heating and Cooling Lab
    • Lab will be performed in groups of 3 or 4
    • All members of a lab group will contribute to the group
    • Lab Leaders - Responsible for to see that all aspects of the lab are covered (Rubric is a good place to start)
    • Recorder - Responsible for writing and submitting all required written material
    • Investigators - Responsible for executing the procedure and collection of data (there may be two of these)
    • Use the word document provided above as the starting point for the group lab report
    • Strongly suggest that the report and data be stored on a flash drive to prevent loss of work
