Writer's Workshop

Young children begin writing the minute a crayon is put into their hand. It begins as scribble and progresses through many stages. We can see picture writing, random letter writing, and phonetic word writing.Our kindergarten students will be engaged in a writing process based on the work of Lucy Calkins. This is a district wide initiative so all of our students will be actively involved in this extensive writing on a daily basis.
Some of the benefits of Writer's Workshop include the following:
- Students develop independence, motivation, and ownership as writers. They develop a love of writing because, they write about topics that are of personal significance.
- Students learn how to evaluate their own writing to make improvements, and they learn how to write to create stories with the audience and ultimate purpose in mind.
- Writer's Workshop sets a collaborative tone and builds a community of readers and writers.
- Helps students see the connections between reading and writing.
