Reading Strategies for Word Solving

• Look at the picture. Think, "What would make sense?"
  
• Really look and try to chunk the word (look for parts you know)
• Think about what else you can try to solve a tricky word
• Think about the story-what would make sense?
  
• Reread the sentence often if you need to and think- what would sound right?
  

Reading Strategies for Understanding a Story

1. Visualize- make mental pictures in your head about the story.

2. Monitor- Stop and think, "Does this make sense?"

3. Go Back- If you find that it doesn't make sense, revisit that part and stop to think again to make sure that you are understanding the story.

4. Summarize: Think in your head what is happening in the story so far...what is this mostly about?

5. Make Connections: Stop briefly to connect- "This reminds me of..." or "I read something like this before in..."

6. Use Prior Knowledge- use what you know about something already to enhance your thinking about a story

7. Talk about it- hold a conversation with someone about what was read from the story!

8. Revisit! It's okay to go back into a story to find something out!

9. Self-Question: Stop to give yourself a purpose for reading by asking good questions during reading.

10. Enjoy what you read! Find a topic or a special author that reaches out to you! Find that special author or series and stick with it!
