Introduction

Pack your bags!  You have just finished your vacation that you won for being the brightest 5th grader in your house.  You need to pack your suitcase according to what you did on your vacation and what the weather was like in your state destination.  You are going to decide where your trip took you and show what souvenirs you are bringing home.  Have fun on your packing.

Introduction                                                        

This lesson was developed as part of the 5^th grade Science curriculum. It will be used during the study of the different regions of the United States.  The WebQuest asks the students to create a suitcase afill it with items they could find in their state.                                                                                                 

                                                       Learners                                                                                            

    This WebQuest is designed for 5th gradeand is designed to be used during the Unit on the regions of the United States in Social Studies. The lesson is anchored in several Social Studies and Language Arts standards.                                                                                                                         

Learners will need to know basic computer research skills.

7.2 A Describe the physical characteristics of places and regions

Language Arts standards addressed:

1.2.5B  use and understand a variety of media and evaluate the quality of media produced. 

1.6.5 Use media for learning purposes

1.8.5 Locate information using appropriate sources and strategies

This lesson encourages cooperation, decision making, and creative production.

2.      Meet with your partner and compare your worksheets.  If there are any differences, research to see who was correct.

3.      Use the information that the two of you found and decide what 5 facts you will create into stickers to place on the outside of your suitcase.

4.      Look over your worksheets and decide what 15 facts you will put in your suitcase.  Guidelines are attached.

5.      You and your partner should create a suitcase that opens.  Use your creativity.  Don't forget a handle.

6.      Create the stickers and place them on the outside of your suitcase.  Each of you need to create atleast 2 stickers.  Put your initials lightly in the lower left corner of the sticker so I can see who did what.

7.      Create your 15 items for the inside of your suitcase.  Each person needs to create atleast 7 items.  Once again, place your initials in the lower left corner.

8. Present your suitcase with your partner.

This lesson involves one class, placed into partners.  It will be taught over several class periods. 

A teacher needs to have  basic computer skills in order to help the students.

Resources Needed

One computer for every student.

Worksheet for each student to answer research questions.

Paper to create suitcase, stickers, and items.
