Reading LogThe best way to improve reading ability is to READ! Every quarter, your child will be assigned a required number of pages to read. To keep track of his or her reading, your child will log his or her reading on the quarterly reading log. For each book he or she reads, your child will fill in a row on the quarterly reading log and complete a literary elements OR nonfiction organizer.
Quarterly Page Goals:
First Quarter = 400 pages
Second Quarter = 450 pages
Third Quarter = 500 pages
Fourth Quarter = 550 pages
Students read only self-selected novels for this assignment. We encourage students to choose books that are "just right" for them. We want to foster a love of reading by allowing students the opportunity to read literature they will both understand and enjoy.Students can stay on track with their reading by doing the following:1. Keep up with Daily Independent Reading Time (DIRT) assignment! This is a weekly 4-point homework assignment. Your child will be required to read outside of class at least 4 times each week for approximately 20 minutes per session. Your child is also required to get a signature for each reading session. Please only sign the DIRT log if you are certain that your child has completed the reading. DIRT logs that are returned without parent signatures, or that are returned after the assigned due date, will receive a 0/6. One purpose of this assignment is to help your child reach his or her quarterly page goal. All of the pages that your child reads for his or her DIRT log will count towards his or her quarterly page goal.2. Use Friday independent reading time wisely! All students are given independent reading time in class at least once per week. Staying on task during this time is a great way to get closer to the page goal.
