After School Detention, Saturday Detention, In-School Suspension (I.S.S), and Out-of-School Suspension (O.S.S)

After School Detention:
There are two forms of detention: a teacher's detention and an office detention. 
A teacher's detention may be given to a student when a student misbehaves, does not follow the class rules, misses homework or projects, etc.  These detentions could vary in time from five minutes to an hour in length.  The teacher will fill out a form and give it to the student to take home to his/her parent or guardian indicating the reason for the detention.  The teacher must give at least 24 hours notice, so the parents can arrange transportation in order for their child to stay after school.  If a student misses a teacher's detention, an office detention will be scheduled.  Failure to attend several teacher detentions may result in a Saturday detention.
An office detention is slightly different because the Assistant Principal and/or an office staff will assign them.  This detention is between 30 – 60 minutes in length.  The student must arrive at the detention before 3:00 pm and will be permitted to leave at the pre-established time.  During the duration of the detention, the teacher/counselors will help the student to learn from the mistake and come up with solutions to his/her actions.  During Friday detentions, a student will fill out various assignments to assist them to learn from the mistakes.  Failure to comply with the rules may result in the student being reassigned the detention and possible further disciplinary actions.  The Assistant Principal and/or an office staff must give at least 24 hours notice, so the parents can arrange transportation in order for their child to stay after school.  If a student misses or is late to the designated detention site, then a Friday detention will be scheduled.  Failure to attend a rescheduled office detention will result in a Saturday detention. 

Saturday Detention:
Saturday detentions are going to be scheduled at Southern Middle School's library.  The duration of the detention is three hours in length and it starts promptly at 8:00 and ends at 11:00.  Students will not be permitted to enter the school after 8:05 am.  During the duration of the detention students will be expected to complete various programs from the Ripple Effects program and read a book (the book is from their own choosing) for at least an hour in order to fill out a writing prompt.  Failure to comply with the rules may result in the student being reassigned the detention and possible further disciplinary actions.  Failure to go to Saturday detention will result in an in-school suspension.

In-School Suspension:
The principal or his/her designee is the only person who can assign an in-school suspension.  A letter will be sent home with the student indicating the incident that warranted an in-school suspension and the duration of the in-school suspension.  When the student arrives to school the next day, he/she must report directly to the main office.  Once the in-school suspension teacher arrives, the student will be escorted to the Skills room where he/she will remain for the duration of the school day.  While the student is in the Skills room the teacher will ask the student to read and sign the contract pertaining to the rules and procedures.  During the day, teacher(s) will send work in order to ensure that the student will not miss the assignments given.  However, a student might need to make arrangements with the teacher if the student is unable to complete the work assigned to the class. 
* Additional rules: during the duration of the in-school suspension, the student is not permitted to participate in any after school activities.  As soon as the school day is over, the student must leave the property and is not permitted to come on any Wilson property until the next school day.

Out-of-School Suspension:
The principal or his/her designee is the only person who can assign an out-of-school suspension.  A letter will be sent home with the student indicating the incident that warranted an out-of-school suspension and the duration of the out-of-school suspension.  Students are responsible for calling the homework hot-line in order to find out what work was assigned.  If the duration of the out-of-school suspension is for a long period of time, the teachers will be asked to collect and send missed assignments. 
* Additional rules: during the duration of the out-of-school suspension, the student is not permitted to participate in any after school activity and is not permitted to come on any Wilson property until the next school day.
