Drawing 1 - Semester course paired with Painting 1

Prerequisite - None

This course provides the student with the opportunity to create artworks using a variety of drawing media and incoroporating various techniques. Drawing from observation and life is stressed.

Painting 1- Semester course paired with Drawing 1

Prerequisite - None

This course introduces the student to acrylic paints. Color theory is stressed. Students paint on paper, canvas board, and stretched canvas. Watercolor and tempera paint are also used.

Drawing 2 - Semester course paired with Painting 2

Prerequisite - Drawing and Painting 1

Students continue developing their observation skills and refining their individual techniques. Drawings are created from models, still lifes, and architecture. Each student creates a self-portrait.

Painting 2 - Semester course paired with Drawing 2

Prerequisite - Drawing and Painting 1

Students paint with acrylic and oil paints on a variety of surfaces such as cardboard, furniture, and canvas. The opportunity exists for students to stretch their own canvases and work in a large format.

Drawing 3 - Semester course paired with Painting 3

Prerequisite - Drawing and Painting 2

This upper-level drawing course allows students to refine their drawing ability using various media, such as drawing pencils, markers, and colored pencils. Students draw from observation and from imagination, Both 2D and 3D projects are created.

Painting 3 - Semester course paired with Drawing 3

Prerequisite - Drawing and Painting 2

Students create artworks in watercolor, acrylic and oil paints. Both realistic and abstract subjects are painted. Students are encouraged to develop individual styles as well as incorporating the styles and techniques of famous painters.

Abstraction - Semester course paired with Crafts

Prerequisite - None

All abstraction is based on reality. The student will explore abstraction through design, drawing, and painting. This course is great for the student who wants to push his/her imagination to its limits. The ability to think abstractly will benefit the student in both art and other academic disciplines

Crafts - Semester course paired with Abstraction

Prerequisite - None

This semester-long course allows the student to pursue various crafts such as bookbinding, stained glass, tie-dying, and batik among with other projects. It is a course that is very hands-on and requires no previous art experience.

Ceramics- Semester course paired with Sculpture

Prerequisite - None

Various ceramic construction techniques such as hand-building with slabs and coils and throwing on the wheel will be utilized in this semester course. Various glazes and glazing techniques will be explored.

Sculpture- Semester course paired with Ceramics

Prerequisite - None

This course will involve building/constructing artworks in three dimensions. Materials such as wood, plaster, cardboard, and found objects will be utilized.

Advanced Placement Art History - Year long course

Prerequisite - None

This course is designed to provide an understanding and enjoyment of architecture, sculpture, painting, and other art forms within historical and cultural contexts. No prior experience in art history is assumed. Students who have done well in other courses in the humanities (such as history and literature) or in any of the studio arts are especially encouraged to enroll. The students examine major forms of artistic expression from the past and the present from a variety of cultures. Students learn to look at works of art critically, intelligently, and sensitively, and to analyze what they see. Many colleges and universities offer advanced placement and/or credit to students who have performed successfully on the AP Art History Examination.

Prerequisite - Drawing and Painting 2 and permission of an art teacher

Students registering for this course select a concentration in drawing, 2D design, or 3D design. Whichever area is chosen, the creation of a portfolio is required. Each portfolio consists of three sections - quality, concentration, and breadth. Exact deadlines must be met throughout the school year in order to fulfill the requirements of this advanced course. Possible awarding of college credit is based on presentation of the actual portfolio or through submission of slides for the 3D segment.
